Either you love Space Jam or you’re wrong. Especially after a semi-reunion will happen on court come NBA’s next season.
League sources tell Yahoo! Sports that Hall of Fame center and “Space Jam” actor Patrick Ewing has reached an agreement to become the associate head coach for the Charlotte Bobcats.
Charlotte team owner Michael Jordan and Ewing both appeared in the 1996 animated cult movie classic that starred Jordan and the Looney Tunes. As luck would have it, Jordan and Ewing were longtime rivals back in the NBA as superstars for the Chicago Bulls and New York Knicks.
Ewing will join the coaching staff of new Bobcats head coach Steve Clifford, whose team will use the name Bobcats again last season. Ewing and Clifford has a long and strong professional and personal history together.
Sacramento Kings coach Mike Malone was also in negotiations to try and hire Ewing for his coaching staff.
Ewing previously worked eight seasons as an NBA assistant coach with stints with the Orlando Magics for 2008-12, and with the Houston Rockets for 2003-08. Ewing was an assistant on each staff with Clifford before sitting it out the 2012-13 season.
Ewing was interviewed for the head-coach post for the Bobcats back in 2012 but Mike Dunlap ultimately got the position. Ewing also interviews for the head coach job for the Detroit Pistons in 2011.
